the fjc standard:
independent fine jewellery training for personal shoppers & private client teams
THE GAP THIS ADDRESSES
Personal shoppers and private client professionals are expected to advise with authority across categories. Fine jewellery is often where that confidence is hardest to build, not because advisors lack capability, but because the available knowledge is usually brand-led, technical, or disconnected from live client conversations.
The FJC Standard gives advisors the independent, client-facing knowledge to guide high-value jewellery conversations before they reach the boutique door.
Fine jewellery purchases at the private client level are often brand-led, but not always because the advisor has made that recommendation. Clients arrive with names they recognise. The personal shopper accompanies them, the maison sales associate takes over, and the advisor's role becomes facilitation rather than guidance.
This training exists to change that dynamic, giving advisors the knowledge and confidence to shape the conversation before it reaches the boutique door, and to offer a perspective the client cannot get from the brand itself.
Developed by Jovana Benson, GIA AJP, from over a decade working across multi-brand and single-house fine jewellery environments, including Harrods and the LVMH Watches & Jewellery division, The FJC Standard is designed for professionals advising clients at the £10,000+ level.
What your team will be able to do differently
The goal is not to produce gemologists. It is to produce advisors who can have the conversations that build genuine client trust.
For example, advisors should be able to explain why a Kashmir sapphire may command a significant premium over a Ceylon sapphire, while still recognising that the most beautiful stone in the room may be the one the client responds to personally. That balance between objective value and subjective beauty is where trust is built.
On completing this training, advisors will be able to:
Evaluate diamonds and key gemstones beyond the 4Cs, understanding what actually determines quality and value at the point of purchase
Navigate engagement ring and high jewellery conversations with greater authority, including how to compare pieces across brands and sourcing routes
Understand the distinction between objective value and subjective beauty, and know how to hold both in a client conversation
Identify where brand-led recommendations serve the client, and where they don't
Speak to fine jewellery with the kind of considered, independent perspective that builds lasting client trust
Avoid the most common and costly mistakes made when advising on significant jewellery acquisitions
The emphasis throughout is practical and client-facing. This is not technical training for its own sake. It is advisory capability for professionals working with clients at the £10,000 and above level.
Format & delivery
The FJC Standard is delivered as a focused half-day session, typically three to four hours.
Sessions are delivered on-site at your organisation, with remote delivery available where in-person is not practical.
The curriculum is developed in consultation with the organising team to reflect your client profile, category mix, and the specific areas where your advisors want to build confidence. No two teams are identical, and the training reflects that.
Investment
Pricing is available on request and quoted according to team size, format and scope.
All attendees receive access to follow-up advisory support for live client questions after the session, so the training continues to be useful beyond the room.
Preferential rates are available for referrals and returning clients.
Who this is for
This training is most relevant for personal shopping teams, private client advisors, and luxury retail professionals whose clients regularly acquire, or are considering acquiring, fine jewellery at a significant level. It is equally suited to individuals who want to deepen their own category knowledge ahead of a role change or client brief. Individual sessions are available, please enquire for details.
If you are unsure whether it is the right fit for your team, an initial conversation costs nothing.
